The Chernobyl arch at D-6 months

Each 26 April, on the anniversary of the explosion of reactor No. 4, images of Chernobyl suddenly take on a more sombre hue. Those who visited the site can testify to that: the scenes of 1986 are so deeply ingrained they can scarcely believe their eyes when they come upon it now, surrounded by forests and a lake, and with people at work there. Twenty-two years after the accident, Chernobyl is definitely not a no man’s land. Even so, the 30-km “forbidden zone” and watchtowers remain. That’s because inside the sarcophagus, the bloc no. 4 structure wrecked by the explosion, lies the bulk of the reactor fuel mixed up with structural materials, all adding up to a 1,350-tonne vitrified mass. In Guyancourt and Kiev on hard work, the teams of Novarka, joint venture formed by VINCI Constructions Grands Projets and Bouygues TP, are planning the Chernobyl containment shelter “system”, and the project’s operational contours are taking shape.

Design: what is the builder's responsibility?
