Breakthrough of second Liefkenshoek tunnel
As part of the Liefkenshoek rail link project, in Anvers, Belgium, the
digging of a second tunnel was completed on Saturday, July 23, 2011.
The almost 6-km-long tunnel was dug over a period of 17 months by the
“Fanchon”, a pressure-balanced tunnel boring
machine, at an average rate of 350 ml per month. The boring rate on
this tunnel had slowed down so that preparatory work could be carried
out at the level of the connecting tunnels. Remember that the first
tunnel was completed by the “Bobette” tunnel boring
machine on May 16, 2011, after 13 months of digging.
