VINCI Construction Grands Projets first steps in the UK were made in 1992 with the construction of the second bridge on the Severn estuary, a cable stay bridge connecting England and Wales. Our branch in London was established to ensure the development of local long-term partnerships based in the UK.
This has permitted us to participate in the construction of three major sections of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL 310, 350 and 410), the British part of the high-speed train between London and the Channel Tunnel, including the design and the construction of the North Downs Tunnel, the bridge on the Medway river and Thurrock, Rainham and Aveley viaducts. We also designed and constructed all the seven rail and road tunnels of the new Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport in London.
The integrated construction-concession operation of the VINCI business model allowed us to be awarded the Newport Southern Distributor Road design and construction contract, which included the award winning City bridge crossing the River Usk (Green Apple Award/Structural Steel Design Award). We have completed at the end of 2008 the design and construction of the world’s second longest push-launched bridge (the Clakmannanshire bridge in Scotland), and in May 2010, the widening of the M1 near Nottingham (junction 25 to 28). Our teams have now started the work on the Lee Tunnel Project in London.
Designing and constructing major infrastructures and complicated structures in the UK in partnership with our British and Irish colleagues is our prime target.
Constructing a sustainable future
At VINCI Construction Grands Projets, we engineer solutions that are not only financially competitive, but work sustainably for the planet. Superior design and construction practises are helping us save 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in two years.
At Clackmannanshire Bridge in Scotland we responded innovatively to sensitive environmental factors. We’ve left a legacy of reduced traffic congestion and pollution for local residents, and have enlarged the local wildlife habitat by hectares.
In our M1 widening project, the road planning material was 100% recycled and included neutralised tar in the sub base, avoiding their transfer to the hazardous waste treatment procedure. It contributes to a hefty 16,000-t CO2 equivalent emission reduction.
On the Hallandsas TBM project in Sweden, all the discharged water from the construction sites is monitored continuously quality and quantity wise before sent back to the natural environment. Also on this project, every chemical products used have been through a complete eco-toxicological evaluation regarding their impacts on human health and environment before being approved.
Just a few of the ways in which VINCI Construction Grands Projets demonstrates sustainability leadership.
