As part of a lineage of 100-year-old companies whose names are associated with impressive achievements worldwide, VINCI Construction Grands Projets possesses end-to-end expertise in the creation of complex infrastructure.

Throughout the world, VINCI Construction Grands Projets designs and builds major civil engineering structures (tunnels, bridges, dams, liquefied natural gas storage tanks, road and rail infrastructure), buildings (skyscrapers, shopping centres, hotels), major industrial facilities, nuclear power plants, etc.

VINCI CONSTRUCTION GRANDS PROJETS IN THE BRITISH ISLES

VINCI Construction Grands Projets first steps in the UK were made in 1992 with the construction of the second bridge on the Severn Estuary, a cable-stayed bridge connecting England and Wales. Its branch in London was established to ensure the development of local long-term partnerships based in the UK. This has permitted us to participate in the construction of three major sections of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link: CTRL 410 (North Downs Tunnel); CTRL 350 (Medway River Crossing); and CTRL 310 (West Thames), including the in-house design of Thurrock, Rainham and Aveley viaducts.

VINCI Construction Grands Projets also constructed all the seven rail and road tunnels of the new Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport in London.

VINCI’s integrated construction-concessions business model won the Newport Southern Distributor Road design and construction contract, which included the award-winning City bridge crossing the River Usk (Green Apple Award/Structural Steel Design Award).

At the end of 2008, we completed the design and construction of the world’s second longest push-launchedbridge (the Clackmannanshire Bridge in Scotland); in May 2010, the widening of the M1 near Nottingham (junction 25 to 28) and in February 2012, the advanced works for Tottenham Court Road Crossrail station (package C421).

Our teams are currently working on the Lee Tunnel Project in London, on the Liverpool Street and Whitechapel station tunnels for Crossrail (package C510), as well as the new Whitechapel Crossrail station (package C512).

Our prime goal is the design and construction of major infrastructure and complicated structures, working in partnership with our British and Irish colleagues.

Innovation

Innovation Awards - UK & Ireland region : Lee Tunnel on the limelight

When grabbing the Grand Prize, as well as a Special Jury Prize, Lee Tunnel project was on the limelight on the 24th of October in London, at the UK and Ireland prize giving ceremony.

Jean-Christophe Galan, Chebli Matta and François Pogu won the Grand Prize for the construction of the lining of very deep shafts (80 m). Key of this success was to build the lining as an independant cylinder from the diaphragm walling of the shaft. The cylinder is built using slipform and then "prestressed" thanks to a concrete containing a retarder. With 90% less steel and a quicker construction period - 6 to 8 weeks won per shafts - this is safer and easier to replace the traditional method with this innovative one that enable to spare on time and budget, while meeting current cracking standards.

Emmanuel Costes and François Pogu won a special jury prize for the implementation of a buffer storage system for evacuating excavated materials from the shafts and their handling into trucks. This system limits human intervention as much as possible and enables to minimise double handling of the materials while making it safer and quicker to excavate the shafts.

No lost time accident happened during shaft excavation.

Watch the movies presenting the innovations.

The Lee Tunnel project calls for the construction of a 7-kilometre tunnel for storm and wastewater in East London for a total of €550 million. The tunnel, lying between 55 and 75 metres below ground, will reduce by 16 million (40%) the 40 million cubic metres of wastewater discharged annually in the River Thames by collecting it at the source. The projects also called for the construction of 5 large shafts as well as supply and installation of the equipment and automation systems needed to manage the effluent and raise it more than 80 metres.

VINCI Construction Grands Projets was already familiar to the VINCI Innovation Awards in the UK and Ireland as they grab the Marketing and Services prize in 2011.

Constructing a sustainable future

At VINCI Construction Grands Projets, we engineer solutions that are not only financially competitive, but work sustainably for the planet. Superior design and construction practises are helping us save 20,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in two years.

By implementing those solutions, we are able To demonstrate On our récent Works (Crossrail C421, M1 Widening) And our ongoing projects (Lee Tunnel, Crossrail C510 And C512) that we are able To achieve works that desserve a grade that ranks us amongst the top 5% of all UK sites according To Considerate Constructors.

At Clackmannanshire Bridge in Scotland we responded innovatively to sensitive environmental factors. We’ve left a legacy of reduced traffic congestion and pollution for local residents, and have enlarged the local wildlife habitat by hectares.

In our M1 widening project, the road planning material was 100% recycled and included neutralised tar in the sub base, avoiding their transfer to the hazardous waste treatment procedure. It contributes to a hefty 16,000-t CO2 equivalent emission reduction.

On the Hallandsas TBM project in Sweden, all the discharged water from the construction sites is monitored continuously quality and quantity wise before sent back to the natural environment. Also on this project, every chemical products used have been through a complete eco-toxicological evaluation regarding their impacts on human health and environment before being approved.

Just a few of the ways in which VINCI Construction Grands Projets demonstrates sustainability leadership.
